New Solo by Marissa Moses

An improvisational embodiment of the stages of grief. Moses dives into the aftermath of trauma using inspiration from Butoh, a form of Japanese dance theater that arose post WWII.
Finding beauty and transcendence through the grotesque, dark, and twisted.
“When one considers the body in relation to dance, it is then that one truly realizes what suffering is: it is a part of our lives. No matter how much we search for it from the outside there is no way we can find it without delving into ourselves.”– Tatsumi Hijikata

The Joel Asher Studio in association with PlayMakersLA present “Macbeth x 5,” a modern reconstruction of Shakespeare’s politically-charged masterpiece about ambition, retribution, and fate. Told in one 90-minute act by five actors playing multiple roles, “Macbeth by 5” tells the story using a seamless interchange of spoken word and physical movement. “Macbeth x 5” is adapted and directed by Joel Asher (LA Shakespeare’s Taming of the Shrew, Othello, Twelfth Night, Merry Wives), with movement by Marissa Moses (Getty Villa and Broad Stage with Helios Dance Theater). “Macbeth x 5 is a visiting production at West LA’s Odyssey Theatre, opening October 21, 2017.

In Macbeth x 5, ambitious General Macbeth, fresh off a military victory, is confronted by three witches who foretell his rise to power. Together with his wife, Macbeth murders his way to the throne -  only to descend into insecurity, paranoia and tyranny.

Macbeth x 5 is a 90-minute scaled-down reinterpretation of Shakespeare’s Macbeth, using an intersection of language and movement to illuminate the story.

Says Joel Asher: “Macbeth is a political play, from the original production which catered to King James’ fascination with witches -  down through 400 years of ambition and retribution. We have found a physical language that illuminates the subtext and makes it modern. While this production will not imitate current political figures, audiences will find it relevant to the world we’re in now. “

"Working with Rosanna Gamson during the Terra Nova Choreographic Residency was just the artistic kick in the pants that I needed! For two years I have been journaling, considering, and envisioning a solo project inspired by William Shakespeare's Romeo & Juliet. This project has been stuck inside of me wanting but not willing to come out in physical form." -Marissa Moses

Marissa would like to express how grateful she is to have had the opportunity to share in such a safe creative space. With her fellow residency choreographers and through the guidance and support of Rosanna Gamson Marissa has found a herself flooded with a fulfilling and rich sense of community.
WORDS FROM MARISSA - About the Juliet Project
Picture
  • I am trying to hook into something bigger than myself, while I am myself, through the archetype of Juliet.
  • Romeo and Juliet both live within me - I am using the voice and agency of Juliet to get my inner Romeo to be direct, concrete, and truthful.
  • Though I anticipate it diving into many iterations of The Juliet Project throughout the course of my life, both for film and live performance, for this upcoming showing I aim to continue leaning into the space where acting and dance are one for me as a performer.
